(Note : two of the most prolific pop jazz spheres were exotica, which accompanied the
tiki culture that was omnipresent throughout the '50s and early '60s, and space
age music,a rather pop-oriented, accessible style with hints of swing and vocal
jazz spiced up with quite mind-altering sound effects. Moon Gas, a 1963 collab.
between pianist and organist Dick Hyman and singer Mary Mayo, hits the center
of the space age genre directly, with its dreamy tunes; haunting, melancholic
vocal melodies; and groovy, swinging compositions that invite the listener to
an easy dance. Strange little sounds whistle and sparkle around the rather
        uncomplicated, easy-listening, jazz-pop compositions)

This album by prolific legend Martin Denny gave an entire genre its name! Originally
released in 1956, the importance of 'Exotica' is more than just historical, f.i. since
the songs are all outstanding. Based on jazz and folk, this is an early example of
mind altering music. The rhythmical base is rooted in Latin music, from mambo via
samba to bossa nova, and you find all the Latin American forms of dance music combined
with bebop elements, as well as Asian percussion and harmonies. There are colourful
tunes that make you think of Japanese folk, but you will also recognize melodies that
would be suitable for American western movie soundtracks. The easy listening sound of
the '50s comes as the last ingredient and is the icing on the cake.

New edition! Eden Ahbez (born George Alexander Aberle) was an American songwriter and
recording artist of the 1940's-1960's, whose lifestyle in California was influential
on the hippie movement. Ahbez is best known for composing the song 'Nature Boy', which
became a #1 hit in 1948 for Nat 'King' Cole and has since become a pop and jazz
standard. 'Eden's Island', Ahbez' only solo-album, is a unique and superb collection
of exotica and easy listening tunes that will make you feel the world is a better
place. At least for a short while.

The 2017 edition of this cult exotica album, originally from 1960, including bonus
cuts. Outsider beat-poet and composer Eden Ahbez already was leading the hippie life
long before the movement existed. Best known for writing the classic song 'Nature
Boy' in 1947, he released his exotica masterpiece 'Eden's Island' in 1960. The album
is an epic conceptual work about a utopian society on a far-away island where people
live in peace and harmony. The music itself is at least as interesting, blending
relaxed grooves with dreamy vocals, easy swing with Latin, and folk traditions from
around the world with more powerful sections. A classic exotica title back on vinyl!

A classic 1959 full-length by the master of exotica, Les Baxter, sees a welcome reissue
with additional tracks! This LP offers a wonderfully orchestrated soundtrack to an
exciting, imaginary journey through various jungles, tropical as well as urban. Full
of haunting atmospheres, Latin jazz influences and delightful passages with wordless
female vocals, 'Les Baxter's Jungle Jazz' stil manages to build bridges between the
planet's rainforests and the dreams of urban youngsters in the western world (and
their parents).
